Section 15.8. Section 15.8. To provide territorial defence and support in civil emergencies there is a conventionally armed Scottish Defence Force. The law provides for participation in humanitarian aid activities and in selected United Nations mandated peacekeeping operations.
Section 15.8. This wording seems unduly restrictive. (1) If Scotland is a member of an alliance its forces may need to go beyond territorial defence.
(2) There are other relevant international organisations besides the UN, e.g. the European Union.
(3) The wording allows for peacekeeping operations but not peacemaking (which is different).
Section 15.8. Agree. Delete specific reference to "United Nations", substitute "international organisations as selected by the Scottish Parliament". Delete peacemaking/peacekeeping substitute "operations consistent with the safety, security and good reputation of the Scottish people"
